About This Position:

The Ferry Manager A position is necessary to provide direct technicalsupervision and oversight of state-owned ferry vessels classified as inspected passenger vessels under United States Coast Guard (USCG) regulations, specifically 46 CFR Subchapter H or M, while those vessels are undergoing repair, survey, modification, or construction in shipyards located statewide. The position also provides oversight of other state-owned vessels and marine equipment during repair and modification activities to ensure regulatory compliance, operational readiness, and safe transportation of the public.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Minimum Qualifications

Five years of experience in marine operations or maritime industry operations; OR possession of a current U.S. Coast Guard officer's credential as a Master or Chief Engineer. NOTE: Possession of a current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) will be required at the time of appointment.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Serves as the Department's on-site representative during shipyard repair, construction, and modification projects, ensuring all work complies with DOTD specifications, contract requirements, and federal maritime regulations.
  • Coordinates directly with the United States Coast Guard (USCG), naval architects, engineers, contractors, shipyard management, and vendors to oversee vessel inspections, certifications, and regulatory compliance.
  • Provides technical oversight of complex vessel repair and construction projects by monitoring work progress, evaluating marine systems and structural modifications, and recommending corrective actions to maintain vessel safety and operational readiness.
  • Maintains and manages critical regulatory documentation, including Certificates of Inspection, Vessel Security Plans, Fire and Safety Plans, Stability Letters, and other required maritime records necessary for USCG certification.

  • Ferryboat Operator Manager A - $36.18 up to $65.10 per hour
