Career Coach

The Career Coach teaches program courses and provides individualized and group support to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities enrolled in the Integrative Community Studies (ICS) program on campus. The Career Coach provides direct instruction on programmatic topics (e.g., independent living, socialization, functional academics, workforce readiness). The Career Coach supports students in developing workplace readiness, gaining meaningful employment experiences, and fostering independence across academic, social, and community settings. This role is essential in helping students successfully obtain and maintain internships and paid employment during and after their college program.

Employment Support

  • Provide on-the-job training, coaching, and natural supports to students at campus and community work sites.
  • Support students in learning job tasks, meeting employer expectations, and problem-solving challenges.
  • Assist students in developing soft skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, and workplace professionalism.
  • Fade support as appropriate to encourage independence and self-advocacy.

Student Development

  • Teach students critical program content in areas of independent living skills, socialization, and functional academics.
  • Help students explore career interests, complete job applications, and prepare for interviews.
  • Deliver or co-facilitate workshops on job readiness, workplace safety, and self-determination.
  • Support students in building resumes, portfolios, and employment documentation.
  • Promote independence by teaching travel training, money management, and other employment-related life skills when applicable.
  • Guide student through self-reflective practices to make and achieve employment-related goals and to improve work-related skills.

Collaboration and Documentation

  • Collaborate with ICS program staff in completing teaching responsibilities.
  • Work closely with the ICS program staff, faculty, families, vocational rehabilitation, and community partners to coordinate student supports.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, work hours, employer feedback, and accommodations provided.
  • Communicate regularly with the Program Manager to track outcomes and identify additional student needs.
  • Participate in team meetings, program instruction, trainings, and professional development opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree with 1 year experience (2 years of graduate assistantship qualifies)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in special education, rehabilitation counseling, human services, psychology, or related field.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based employment practices (e.g., supported employment, customized employment).
  • Familiarity with postsecondary education settings and universal design for learning.
  • Experience with vocational rehabilitation or workforce development systems.

Work Conditions

  • Work hours may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and occasional weekends depending on student job schedules.
  • Position requires local travel to campus and community employment sites.
  • Moderate physical activity may be required depending on student job settings (e.g., retail, hospitality, food service).
