Environmental Scientist Supervisor

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality's (LDEQ) mission is to provide service to the people of Louisiana through comprehensive environmental protection in order to promote and protect health, safety and welfare. The Environmental Scientist Supervisor (ESS) is responsible for supervision of the work processes of subordinates to ensure procedural and technical accuracy and completeness within a functional unit in the Radiation Section. This position requires a high degree of knowledge of environmental regulations in order to supervise the inspection of radioactive material and x-ray equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field plus three years of experience in an environmental program, nuclear energy or radiation protection program; Geographic Information Systems (GIS); an environmental, analytical, or research laboratory, LIMS (Lab Integrated Management Systems), or laboratory auditing.
  • A master's degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field plus two years of the experience in an environmental program, nuclear energy or radiation protection program; Geographic Information Systems (GIS); an environmental, analytical, or research laboratory, LIMS (Lab Integrated Management Systems), or laboratory auditing.
  • A doctorate in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field plus one year of experience in an environmental program, nuclear energy or radiation protection program; Geographic Information Systems (GIS); an environmental, analytical, or research laboratory, LIMS (Lab Integrated Management Systems), or laboratory auditing.

Job Duties and Other Information:

  • Supervises immediate subordinates in the Inspection Unit.
  • Organizes and assigns workloads by establishing and updating work schedules or setting priorities for the assigned group.
  • Reviews the work of subordinates to ensure technical accuracy and completeness as well as consistency with Departmental policies and maintenance of Divisional quality control objectives. Reviews the X-ray and Radioactive Material (RAM) inspections, incidents and complaint reports for technical accuracy. Determines Compliance Actions warranted. Tracks completion of inspectors reports.
  • Occasionally accompanies inspectors on RAM and X-ray inspections and provide training to inspectors lacking sign off's.
  • All other assigned duties such as time keeping in LEO and duties to help forward the Radiation Section as well as bring forth new ideas and policies.

Compensation: This position offers a Special Entrance Rate (SER) listed below. This is the minimum compensation that may be offered. The job title and salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
