The overall function of this position is to maintain and/or make basic repairs to a variety of mobile equipment and small equipment. This position is located in the Section 42 Unit 071 Mechanic Shop of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Mechanic Supervisor B. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.
Positions maintain, repair, and overhaul both light and heavy mobile equipment or complex mechanical systems on mobile equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience or training as a mechanic.

JOB DISTINCTIONS: Differs from Trades Apprentice by the presence of independent performance of routine preventive maintenance and repair of small engines and mobile equipment in a non-trainee capacity. Differs from Mechanic 2 by the absence of independent responsibility on major components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, etc.
