Veterinary Technician
The Large Animal Hospital operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This person will provide technical veterinary support to faculty, house officers, and students throughout the large animal hospital. It is essential that this person has expertise in handling livestock and is able to provide instruction to veterinary students on proper and safe handling of these potentially dangerous large animals. To include support for emergency cases seen during and after hours. To include proper adherence to infection control protocols. Areas of patient care and responsibilities include but are not limited to the large animal isolation barn, resident herd, food animal, equine, & LA-ICU.
Veterinary Technician 1
40% Carry out day to day operations of the large animal hospital with supervision of senior staff:
- Assist house officers, clinicians and students with appointments, emergencies, procedures and inpatient treatments.
- Safely carry out inpatient hourly checks and treatments - with supervision of senior staff
- Safely unload, load, and admit large animal patients
- Safely and humanely restrain patients using devices included but not limited to a squeeze chute, tilt table, roundabout, sorting panels, stocks, halters, and/or cradle with supervision of senior staff
- Set up for treatments/procedures, facilitate the safe execution of treatments/procedures, and clean up afterward with supervision of senior staff
30% Assist with:
- Interacting with clients and maintain patient confidentiality in a professional and courteous manner.
- Maintaining medical records, keeping track and input of charges for large animal inpatients and outpatients.
- Participate by assisting teaching process of veterinary students and veterinary technician students.
- Assist with monitoring safety of others (Clinicians, House Officers, Students, Clients, fellow co-technicians, etc.) while working around large and potentially dangerous animals.
20% Assist with:
- Stocking and cleaning of rooms.
- Ensuring proper biosecurity and infectious disease protocol is followed
- Procedures such as bandages, sample collections, blood transfusions, ultrasound, IVC placement, etc. with the supervision of senior staff
5% Participate in holiday coverage, weekend coverage and emergency response as activated.
5% Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree OR Associate's degree in veterinary technology OR CVT or equivalent OR 3 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties
Preferred Qualifications: CVT or equivalent with 1 year of applicable experience
Veterinary Technician 2
40% Perform and demonstrate the day-to-day operations of the large animal hospital; not limited to:
- Assisting house officers, clinicians and students with appointments, emergencies, procedures and inpatient treatments with little/no supervision
- Safely carry out inpatient hourly checks and treatments - with little/no supervision
- Safely unloading, loading, and admitting large animal patients with little/no supervision
- Safely and humanely restrain patients using devices included but not limited to a squeeze chute, tilt table, roundabout, sorting panels, stocks, halters, and/or cradle with little/no supervision
- Setting up for treatments/procedures, facilitate the safe execution of treatments/procedures, and clean up afterward with little/no supervision
30% Perform and interact professionally with clients and ensuring proper communication and receiving of information with little/no supervision.
- Maintain accurate medical records, keeping track and input of charges for large animal inpatients and outpatients with little/no supervision.
- Monitor patients throughout the hospital, safely carry out and assist with treatments as described/prescribed by doctors with little/no supervision.
- Keep track and input charges for large animal inpatients and outpatients with little/no supervision.
- Assist with procedures and treatments performed by veterinary and veterinary technician students with little/no supervision.
- Assist with monitoring safety of others (Clinicians, House Officers, Students, Clients, fellow co-technicians, etc.) while working around large and potentially dangerous animals.
20% Participate in the teaching process of veterinary students, veterinary technician students, and newly hired veterinary technicians.
- Assist with procedures such as bandages, sample collections, blood transfusions, ultrasound, IVC placement, etc, ensuring they are being carried out in a safe manner.
- With 4th year veterinary students, house officers, and clinicians, participate with procedures and treatments within the large animal veterinary hospital.
- Ensure proper biosecurity and infectious disease protocol is followed
- Maintenance and cleaning of technical equipment such as endoscopes, ultrasound machines, ECG, oxygen tanks, etc.
- Stocking and cleaning of rooms, carts, and supplies to maintain the hospital in a constant state of readiness.
- Assist in training of students and new staff in protocols including insuring proper biosecurity and infectious disease protocol is followed.
5% Participate in holiday coverage, weekend coverage and emergency response as activated.
5% Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree with 3 years of related experience OR Associate's degree in veterinary technology with 2 years of applicable experience OR CVT or equivalent with 2 years of applicable experience OR 5 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties OR 2 years of experience as a Veterinary Technician 1 at LSU SVM.
Preferred Qualifications: CVT or equivalent with 3 years of applicable experience
Veterinary Technician 3
40% Perform and teach/instruct house officers, clinicians, and students on:
- Setting up appointments, admitting patients, triaging and responding to emergencies, routine and specialized procedures.
- Inpatient treatments and case management including hourly checks and treatments, procedure set up, facilitation of safe execution of treatment, and clean up following.
- Safely unload, load, and admit patients
- Safely and humanely restraining patients using devices included but not limited to a squeeze chute, tilt table, roundabout, sorting panels, stocks, halters, and/or cradle with little/no supervision
30% Perform and teach/instruct house officers clinicians and students on:
- Professional interaction with clients; proper communication and receiving of information.
- Maintaining professional medical records, keeping track and input of charges for large animal inpatients and outpatients.
- Monitor patients throughout the hospital, carry out and assist with treatments as described/prescribed by doctors.
- Oversee procedures and treatments performed by veterinary students to ensure accuracy and safety
- Monitor the safety of others (Clinicians, House Officers, Students, Clients, fellow co-technicians, etc.) while working around large and potentially dangerous animals.
- Appropriate charting (record treatments, procedures, and communication) in the medical record.
- Appropriate estimates and the entry of charge
20% Perform and teach/instruct house officers, clinicians, and students:
- In a lab setting
- Teach veterinary students, veterinary technician students, and newly hired veterinary technicians how to safely perform procedures such as bandages, sample collections, blood transfusions, ultrasound, IVC placement, etc.
- Teach/instruct proper biosecurity and infectious disease protocol and ensure it is being followed
- Promote to house officers, clinicians, and students and ACS staff levels 1 and 2 and maintain:
- Maintenance and cleaning of technical equipment such as endoscopes, ultrasound machines, ECG, oxygen tanks, etc.
- Stocking and cleaning of rooms, carts, and supplies to maintain the hospital in a constant state of readiness.
- Proper communication with clinicians and other staff on patient status, service status, etc.
5% Participate in holiday coverage, weekend coverage and emergency response as activated.
5% Other duties as assigned.
