Job Description:
Reporting to the Head of Archival Processing, the Processing Archivist arranges and describes archival material held by LSU Libraries Special Collections. The incumbent performs processing and cataloging of physical records in the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collection (LLMVC) and the LSU University Archives; participates in projects to revise, edit, correct, and digitally publish legacy finding aids and MARC catalog records; and creates description for digitization projects. They also provide public services at Special Collections service points and perform other duties as assigned.
Job Responsibilities:
* 60% Performs preliminary and full processing of physical manuscript and archives collections; researches historical and biographical information relevant to the collection; and creates finding aids and MARC catalog records utilizing knowledge of standards including Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), EAD, MARC, LCSH, LCNAF, and other appropriate thesauri & authority lists used for indexing archival descriptions. Identifies and assists with preservation treatments as needed.
* 15% Participates in projects to revise, edit, correct, and digitally publish legacy finding aids and MARC catalog records for materials in LLMVC and University Archives. Reprocesses and rehouses legacy materials and assists with preservation treatments as needed.
* 10% Performs advanced-level reference work to assist researchers in identifying and using Special Collections and other library materials. Interprets and enforces library policies for the security and administration of the collections.
* 10% Performs service to the libraries, university, and/or profession
* 5% Performs original and complex description of digitized materials by creating or enhancing metadata records, which involves both accurate descriptive cataloging and the assigning of appropriate Library of Congress subject headings. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned in place of description of digitized materials.
Minimum Qualifications:
MLIS or MLS from an ALA accredited program with archival concentration, or other relevant Master's degree. Equivalent work experience may substitute for concentration.
Knowledge of archival theory, practice, standards, and best practices; awareness of information technologies appropriate to archives;
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum of the equivalent of 1 year, full-time experience arranging and describing archival collections.
Experience providing reference service in an archives, special collections, or academic setting; knowledge of Louisiana, southern U.S., and American history; and reading knowledge of French or Spanish.
Preferred skills: research and writing skills; strong commitment to technical services in support of public services.
