Description

Oklahoma State University and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) are conducting a research project on Rio Grande wild turkey harvest and population monitoring in Western Oklahoma. OSU will fill 6 full-time, temporary technician positions to assist with field research from January through April 2026.

Location: Roger Mills and Ellis counties, OK

Salary: $15/hour (plus housing)

Responsibilities include assisting 2 graduate students with capture and handling (including GPS tags) of Rio Grande wild turkeys. Other duties may include deploying/retrieving camera traps and autonomous recording units (ARUs), monitoring tagged birds, investigating mortality sites, data entry, and equipment maintenance. Ability to follow directions, work in teams and independently, and maintain a positive disposition is desired.

Shared housing is provided. Housing includes bunk-bed rooms, shared living room, kitchen, and full bathroom. Technicians provide their own food. Wi-Fi is usually available at the fieldhouse. Housing may be coed and somewhat remote; nearest towns are ~3045 minutes away. Work trucks provided.

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid drivers license
  • Ability to interact respectfully with landowners and managers
  • Organizational skills and detail-oriented mindset
  • Willingness to work odd hours, especially early mornings and weekends
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and terrain
  • Ability to work independently or in teams
  • Willingness to live in a shared space and be respectful to housemates
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and hike long distances over rugged terrain

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience handling wild turkeys
  • Experience with radio telemetry
  • Experience using handheld GPS and/or OnX maps
  • Experience conducting field work
  • Experience with off-road driving

Details: The Coastal Conservation and Restoration Ecology Lab seeks an Assistant Research Scientist to work on habitat restoration projects, integrating ecological performance and genetic data to understand oyster origin, survival, and recruitment in restoration settings.
