The Louisiana Office of Juvenile Justice (OJJ) is committed to protecting the public by providing safe and effective individualized services to youth, who will become productive, law-abiding citizens. We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Guidance Counselor to support the academic, emotional, and career development of youth in secure care. This role is central to OJJ's mission of restoring lives, providing individualized guidance, fostering resilience, and preparing youth for successful reintegration into their communities.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid Certification Requirement:
Must hold one of the following:
Louisiana Ancillary Certificate - School Counselor (Provisional or Standard):
Provisional Certificate (Valid for 3 years): Issued to candidates enrolled in an approved school counseling program and employed as a counselor.
Standard Certificate (Level 1 or 2): Issued after completion of all certification and internship requirements.
Must complete PREA training, confidentiality protocols, mandatory reporting, and trauma-informed care training.
Familiarity with IEPs, 504, EL, IGPs, behavioral support plans, and reentry/transition planning is essential.
Skills in case management, mental health referral, and career/college readiness planning are vital.
Experience working with at-risk or adjudicated youth is highly preferred.

The incumbent will work 7.5 hours per work day.

Job Duties:
The incumbent of this position will assist students in the area of academic achievement, along with personal and social development.
Duties/Examples of Work (the below are examples and not all possible tasks are included)
Provide academic advising, career exploration, and personal counseling to youth in secure care
Collaborate with instructional staff to support Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and transition goals
Facilitate group sessions focused on social-emotional learning, conflict resolution, and life skills
Identify barriers to learning and coordinate referrals to mental health or social services as needed
Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to multidisciplinary team planning
Support trauma-informed practices and ensure compliance with PREA standards
Participate in professional development and contribute to continuous improvement efforts
