Job Summary
A Deputy Assistant Store Manager enjoys working with and supporting the store team to ensure the best experience for our customers every day. You actively coach, develop and manage the performance of our Booksellers and senior booksellers. In your role, you work through the store team to ensure execution of consistent presentation and a first-rate shopping experience for each customer. As a leader, you work collaboratively and support the store team to ensure that booksellers are engaged doing what they love: talking about and selling books.
What You Do
• Ensure consistent, friendly, and informed service to customers, first by the example you set and second by the training and delivery of first-class service.
• Deliver a vibrant bookstore through the execution of bookstore basics: presentation, commerciality, section detail, localization and sense of theater.
• Develop store team, ensuring their active participation in supporting bookseller and barista learning.
• Manage store team, through observation and coaching (whether formal or informal), providing them with timely feedback and productive conversations to ensure expected performance and development of their skills and abilities.
• Resolve employee issues in partnership with the Assistant Store Manager and Store Manager.
• Provide directions on and help to manage initiatives and daily customer engagement with the store team.
• Manage employee schedules, including requests for vacation leave and assignment of additional work or hours.
• Work with the ASM and SM to interview and hire booksellers that are knowledgeable and will provide an optimal shopping experience for our customers, partnering with cluster support when appropriate.
• Recommend bookseller and senior talent for future development to SM, evaluating employees through the review and selection process.
• Ensure compliance with Company standards and policies as they pertain to safety, customer communications and all store operations.
• Communicate with your store team respectfully and with urgency on key issues and messages, creating a culture that demonstrates the values of the company.
• Work on the selling floor, which requires physical activity (i.e., prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, climbing).
• Open and close the building, ensuring the safety of our employees and customers.
Knowledge & Experience
• Possesses solid bookselling knowledge across various genres and a strong understanding of the book industry.
• Enthusiasm for books is reflected in the excellent standards of service for the local community.
• Experience in teaching and working collaboratively with the store team.
• Organized and works with urgency and care because of their understanding of the book business.
• Demonstrates empathy through consistent care and concern for employees.
• Demonstrates active listening, communicating respectfully and always maintaining composure.
• Proven ability to delegate and work through others collaboratively, thoughtfully, and efficiently.
• Experience building collaborative and productive working relationships at all levels.
• Deliver honest and constructive feedback.
• Recognize and work with the cluster structure as expected.
