Description:

The Louisiana Conference of The United Methodist Church is pleased to announce a search for a Treasurer to manage the finance office and serve as the chief source of advice and information on fiscal management, assuring professional application of all accounting principles. The Treasurer will communicate regularly with local churches and Conference leadership on financial and general business matters, and will participate in financial, strategic, and conference-wide planning activities. This position reports to the Executive Director of Mission and Ministry and is accountable to the Committee on Finance and Administration (CF&A), as well as the Bishop of the Louisiana Conference. The Treasurer will serve as an ex-officio member on the Board of Pensions and Health Benefits and the Board of Trustees.

Essential Functions:

  1. Performs and implements policies and practices for cash management, financial record keeping, financial reporting, internal controls, accounting functions, and other treasury responsibilities, ensuring professional application of accounting practices on a modified cash basis.
  2. Develops and recommends procedures for office management, financial data processing, and other fiscal and administrative functions.
  3. Collaborates with senior leadership and key stakeholders to facilitate budget approval, in partnership with the Committee on Finance and Administration and other relevant bodies.
  4. Seeks continuous improvement of financial and administrative systems, driving growth, efficiencies, revenue maximization, expense management, cost savings, and resource alignment to support conference goals.
  5. Analyzes financial information to provide strategic direction supporting the mission, vision, and long-term goals.
  6. Anticipates emerging financial and operational trends, evaluates risks, and recommends solutions to ensure financial resilience.
  7. Communicates financial information effectively to diverse stakeholders to promote transparency and fiscal health.
  8. Ensures timely distribution of month-end and year-end reports to senior staff, boards, and agencies, and coordinates the preparation of funding and cost management reports.
  9. Participates on boards and committees, providing financial counsel and strategic insight.
  10. Establishes and maintains relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support organizational initiatives.
  11. Oversees benefits functions, including administration of church properties, policies for maintenance, insurance, sale, or donation.
  12. Provides training and support to local church treasurers, financial secretaries, and committees.
  13. Oversees and manages accounting staff for efficient operations.
  14. Serves as liaison to Human Resources, overseeing payroll, employee benefits, and policy compliance.
  15. Supervises payroll processes, vendor coordination, tax filings, and related reports.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in accounting/finance required; CPA or advanced degree preferred.
  2. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in accounting/finance, preferably in a non-profit setting.
  3. At least five (5) years of supervisory experience.
  4. Proficiency with MS Office products including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  5. Experience in financial reporting, statements, and audits, with non-profit and fund accounting preferred.
  6. Knowledge of personnel management, purchasing, pensions, insurance, and property maintenance.
  7. Experience in strategic planning and performance measurement.
  8. Ability to analyze problems, think creatively, and develop innovative solutions.
  9. Strong relationship-building skills with internal and external stakeholders.
  10. Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  11. Knowledge of The United Methodist Church and its structure is preferred; membership is strongly preferred.
