Mechanical Technician 1 overview:
This is a full-time, professional position at the Petroleum Engineering Research and Technology Transfer (PERTT) Lab, a $20 million industrial-scale facility with full-scale equipment and instrumentation for conducting training and research related to borehole technology. The incumbent in this position will aid PERTT Lab Operations Manager in general support of all onsite operations including fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repairs at the facility. Supervise PERTT Lab Student Intern Program (SIP) Student Interns. Manage the PERRT Lab fabrication shop, serve as the Property Management asset custodian, and other duties, as assigned. The incumbent in this position should be competent and confident in the operation of all tools and equipment onsite and act as the group leader for work projects.
Mechanical Technician 1 job duties:
Aid PERTT Operations Manager in general support for all operations on-site:
Perform work including fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repairs of all experiment apparatus and system components at the PERTT Lab facility. Perform general labor and lab tasks to support, set up, and break down projects for internal and external customers. Operate systems, machinery, and equipment, as directed. Provide support for PETE lab classes during demonstrations and class sessions, as needed. Provide support for graduate research and undergraduate senior projects, as needed. The incumbent in this position should be competent and confident in the operation of all tools and equipment onsite.
Supervise/Lead PERTT Lab S.I.P. Student Interns:
Perform or demonstrate high level tasks. Delegate and supervise other general labor accordingly. Provide job-specific basic training/guidance on shop tool use, machinery operation, and general industrial atmosphere procedures. Ensure all work is performed in a safe and effective manner. Lead inexperienced student interns to efficiently, properly, and successfully complete assigned tasks in a timely manner. The Technician should act as a group leader for work projects. Patience is required when working with Student Interns, and a large part of leading and supervising students is being a teacher and working through mistakes that will regularly occur.
Manage PERTT Fabrication Shop:
Maintain a clean and organized shop. Perform regular tool maintenance. Ensure all tools are in safe operating condition prior to use. Manage shop inventory, including tool parts and accessories, shop consumables, etc. Maintain shop inventory, (including tool parts and accessories), requiring a significant amount of parts research online. Troubleshooting, maintenance, and machinery failure mode investigation also require regular computer usage.
Property management:
Serve as LSU Property Management "Asset Custodian" at PERTT. Log and track LSU tagged inventory located at PERTT. Manage PERTT parts storage area(s): Maintain clean and organized parts room(s). Develop inventory log for non-tagged PERTT property. Keep up to date list of stock parts with specs and capabilities.
Other duties, as assigned:
Occasional errands, such as picking up parts/supplies from off-site local suppliers. Occasional trips to main LSU campus to assist with other PETE Department needs. Assist and collaborate with PERTT IT and Instrumentation Technician in support of other PERTT needs.
Minimum Qualifications for MT1:
Some related field experience.
Preferred qualifications for MT1:
Bachelor's degree. Preference for incumbent to have at least 5 years of related experience and field experience in Oil & Gas, Fabrication, Manufacturing.

A valid Driver's License is required. This position is subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with PS-67. A physical is required. This position and/or position's responsibilities require work directly with minors. Finger printing and National Sex Offender Registry check required per FASOP HR-04.
